There’s no doubt that there are many couples facing difficult decisions during this recession. Some are taking in people into their homes to help defray living costs, while others are splitting up so one partner can find employment elsewhere. When faced with difficult situations, it helps to understand what your basic motivation and pleasure is in life. If your lifestyle is more important to you, then sticking together, there’s no reason why temporarily splitting up is not a valid choice, as long as both partners are in agreement. If you value your relationship and this is where your sense of joy comes from in your life, there are ways to keep this element in your life as what you want more.

When someone fails to bring income into the relationship, resentment arises for the other partner. This can explode if surprise expenses cause friction too. Planning how to cover shortfalls in income, with credit cards, personal loans, or an online check advance, is something that should be discussed and budgeted ahead of time. The hows and whys of debt techniques should be a joint decision, particularly, if the decision to maintain a lifestyle is paramount. If keeping the cable television is important to the comfort level of the relationship, and that is unaffordable now, then eventually the decision will have to be to either create more income or let a partner go to an area where job opportunities are better.

Those couples that can make sacrifices in their lifestyles without resentment, can take the time to pay off debt, instead of incurring new debt and also re-negotiate their home activities. As long as both partners are making sacrifices for the relationship, and openly communicating their support of each other, there’s no reason why even a historic recession can’t be overcome in time, without resentment which can kill any relationship. Finance choices aren’t just about money, it’s about what you value in your life, whether that’s a lifestyle, a relationship, or just a trip to the movies on Saturday night. Keeping your values in front of you, as guideposts, help you to make decisions you can both live with for the rest of your life.
